CHRISTMAS MASS OBLIGATIONS - GUIDANCE FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN FRANCISCO
December 24, 2017 - December 26, 2017

With Christmas Day on a Monday this year, many people want their Mass obligations clarified. The short answer is: Yes, there is a Sunday obligation and a separate Holy Day obligation. The following information has been supplied to all priests of the Archdiocese.

On Sunday, December 24, which is the Fourth Sunday of Advent, Masses after 4:00 pm should be the Vigil Mass for the Nativity of the Lord and not the Mass for the Fourth Sunday of Advent.  If your parish has a regularly scheduled Sunday evening Mass, the Vigil Mass for the Nativity is to be used.

Obligation to Attend Mass: This year we have the unusual occurrence of the obligation to attend Mass on two consecutive days. People ask: ‘Can I satisfy two obligations with one Mass?’  The U.S. Catholic Bishops have clarified that "When consecutive obligations occur on Saturday-Sunday or Sunday-Monday, the faithful must attend Mass twice to fulfill two separate obligations."

Therefore, the people are obliged to attend one Mass for the Fourth Sunday of Advent (from Saturday evening 12.23 up to 4:00 pm on Sunday 12.24); and one Mass for the celebration of the Nativity of the Lord (from 4:00 pm on Sunday 12.24 through all Masses on Monday 12.25).

SCHEDULE DECEMBER 23 - 25 MASSES

Masses for the the 4th Sunday of Advent will be
  • Saturday, December 23 @ 5:00pm
  • Sunday, December 24 @ 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 11:30 AM  (no 5:30pm mass)

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses are listed below

ADVENT GIVING TREE

As you are preparing for your own family holidays, you are invited to experience the spirit of the Advent Season by reaching out to those in need.  Every year St. Gregory parishioners have been generous in helping out our less fortunate brothers and sisters.  Please notice the Advent Giving Trees in the church vestibule, with the tags.  We hope that you will choose a tag and bring your UNWRAPPED gift or gift cards with you to Mass on the Second Sunday of Advent, December 9-10th and place them in the bin by the statue of St. Joseph or Mary.  If you are unable to attend mass that day, you can bring your gift to the Parish Office no later than Monday, December 11th.  St. Francis Center and The Catholic Worker House will benefit from your generosity.
